Frog Month Victoria – Spring

Feature species

We would love to receive recordings of any and all frogs calling around Victoria throughout the month of October.

However, for Frog Month Victoria: Spring, we we are featuring the threatened Growling Grass Frog (Litoria raniformis). This species has a wonderful growly call.

We are also keen to discover where the Eastern Dwarf Sedge Frog (Litoria fallax) from Queensland and New South Wales has become established around the state of Victoria.

Small Actions – Big Impact

More information

Frog Month Victoria will provide Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) across Victoria with a specialised frog-monitoring program to serve both their volunteers and the scientific community, led by the state’s EstuaryWatch and WaterWatch programs. This new program will deliver comprehensive support and communication tools for CMAs and citizen scientists, while also providing timely, up-to-date reports to drive important conservation efforts.

The project will launch in October 2024 and run for three years. It has partnered with Professor Kirsten Parris, a frog ecologist from the University of Melbourne, and with Melbourne Water, which has made arrangements for the use of its Frog Census App and for extra resourcing to identify the frogs recorded. Melbourne Water will also provide raw data from the App throughout the project.
